This is an interesting photo, one I haven't seen circulating elsewhere. The photo was taken in 1913 and the caption is as follows:
Five generations, of the members of which were born in Tasmania. From left to right: Master Horton Plapp (son of Mrs C Plapp); Mrs Plapp (wife of C Plapp of Federal Glen at Riana); Mrs Bacon (widow of Charles B Bacon of Ross); Mrs Hudson (wife of Edward Hudson of Trevance at Penguin; and Mrs Warner (widow of W E Warner, council clerk at Ross for many years and daughter of Hugh McGuiness of Pittwater at Lower Carlton). The Bay View Hotel was first constructed in 1875 by a prominent local entrepreneur, Captain William Jones. The weatherboard building was originally known as the Jones Hotel. It was fortuitous that immediately after the hotel opened, 150 men dined at the hotel. They had arrived from Melbourne, Launceston and various inland districts to work on the nearby tramway project and at Mount Bischoff. The photo was taken in 1912 during a vehicle reliability trial run from Launceston to Burnie. There were 20 vehicles in the trial in addition to seven motorcycles.
Extra photos this week with a collection from the 1954 Royal Visit to celebrate the royal wedding tonight. Enjoy.
This week's featured photo is of Penguin taken by Stephen Spurling. Any idea when it was taken? National Library of Australia PIC/13001/2271
An interesting article appeared in the April issue of the Science journal. This article touched upon several discussions based upon the world’s largest family tree, that is, 13 million people going back 11 generations.
In September 1906, heavy rainfall resulted in one of the most noteworthy floods to visit the northwest coast in years.
