Can anyone identify the people in this photo? Seated at centre is an elderly couple, Jabez Poke and Jane Bisset, celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in 1931. Seated at far right is Alfred John Poke with his wife, Georgina Burgess, standing directly behind Jane Bisset. But who are the rest of the people? Someone suggested the photo was taken in a backyard at Cooee.

A new webpage has been added, which is a compilation of renamed places in Tasmania (see nomenclature). It is by no means complete and may never be as place names continue to evolve.
Many places in Tasmania have been known by more than one name historically, and sometimes place names evolve as geographical boundaries change. Other place names can also reveal local history and culture as well as natural features signifying the locality of new settlements. In some instances, names were given without much thought and then evolved through local usage until they become officially recorded. This project is an ongoing effort and as such contributions or advice on errors or omissions would be most appreciated. |
