Today I received several enquiries as to who the mystery man was in the banner of the new webpage, Your Gallery. The mystery man is Herbert Andrew Poke, fourth son of Luke Poke and Elizabeth Withnall, born in 1884. The before and after images can be seen below. The second photo was edited in Photoshop, which I use mainly to enhance photos that are yellowed or faded, or sharpen grainy images as you would find in old newspapers. I have been using the same version of Photoshop for well over a decade and haven’t had the inclination to upgrade. I am not familiar with its latest features, however, I believe there are now many applications out there that allows you to enhance or retouch old photos, even on your iPhone.
If you’re using a Mac, depending on which version you have i.e. iPhoto on an older version or Photo on the newer version, both have editing features that allow you to enhance or touchup old photos. Microsoft’s preinstalled application, Photo, also allows you to do the same. Below is a before and after example when using the Mac Photo application. With one click on the Enhance button, the image becomes vastly clearer. You can use other controls to tweak the settings that the Enhance button has imposed.
