In January 1952, a week long, district wide bash was held where multitudes of locals and former residents flocked to the Circular Head district. Many visited from the mainland and several travelled as far as New Zealand.

With the hotel owned and run by Sammy Moore And the breezes blowing in from Perkins Island Were perfumed by the whales that came ashore Yes I was playing full-back then for Smithton And often had my nose well smeared in blood When Pop Ward was the man behind the whistle And refereed the struggles in the mud And George Knight was the only P’lice in Smithton And after playing football you’d be sore You’d leave the Bridge in Tatlow’s coach at midnight And be lucky if you landed home at four Oh! They were the good old days gone by in Smithton When Jack Zimmerman could shave you like a mouse And for a shilling you could buy your dinner At Joey Morton’s leading boarding house Then we had no electric light at Smithton And did not have to worry re the mains For five bob you could hire a horse and jinker And take your love out driving on the plains They were good old days we had in Smithton When folk lined up with bottles and with jugs You could buy a fight across the bridge for nothing And Charlie was the king-pin of the pugs Oh! They were busy times we had in Smithton We did not have much time then to relax I was working with a big chap they called “Native” He had hair upon his chest would gap an axe Oh! They were courting days in dear old Smithton But you had to keep your weather eye on Pop When you went around to have a talky with Daisy And Zella in their spotless lolly shop Yes! They were happy days around the township Fond memories of the same I oft recall When two and six would buy a double ticket We danced till 4 am in Malley’s hall And when my holidays are due again, Pal I’ll just drop in to see how Smithton looks And meet again Phil Bugg and Barney Morgan And lifelong friend, you know him, Leslie Brooks New buildings going up today in Smithton Thank God you have the room there to expand The bacon and the butter factory thriving On products from your lovely fertile land And when your aerodrome is thrown wide open Big planes will come a-roaring thru the blue And bet your life there’ll be one bloke aboard one Who’s proud to say he helped build Smithton too
