After arriving in Tasmania from Yorkshire in 1859, Ralph’s father, John Rockliff, lived with his brother, Henry, at Wesley Dale for about two years. He then moved to Sassafras, where he settled on a block of land known as Shooters Hill. With plenty of solid toil over the next ten years, John cleared the land and made it fit for cultivation. After selling Shooters Hill, John bought a block known as Westfield, which at the time was also densely covered with bushland. In later years, John disposed various portions of the 480 acres of land to his sons but retained the home block, Westfield. Ralph took over Westfield when his father passed away in 1905. Ralph continued to farm the land until around 1951, whereafter he retired to Devonport, where he passed away in 1954.
