Below is a family gathering at Mount Hicks to celebrate the 70th birthday of Martha Harrison, seated at centre. Widow of Joseph Bramich, Martha was the daughter of Thomas Harrison of Mitchley Park, Edgbaston (Birmingham), England, where she was born on 29 May 1837. Pictured in the second photo are also members of the Bramich family who were not included in the first group photo. Who were they? Both photos were taken in 1907.

One of my forebears was a Harrison who married a Watts (Flowerdale area). Either a Watts or Harrison relative was a missionary/nurse in the Boer War - just in case of interest. regards Colleen

Hi Colleen, thank you for this interesting information. I have included in this website portraits and biographies of various Tasmanians who served in the Boer War. Unfortunately none of them were nurses. What was your forebear's first name?

Your Harrison family is different. I believe your ancestor was Minnie Harrison who married a Watts. Sister of my husbands grandmother, Lillian Maude Harrison. The parents were Thomas Harrison from Ireland and Ann Collins.

My great grandfather was James Harrison, oldest surviving son of Thomas Harrison. His wife was Sarah Reeve of Flowerdale & one of the ‘chief mourners’ at his funeral was an F Watts from Flowerdale. James was born in Bowgong, India & my guess is they were missionaries there.

Hi Ros, It was a nice surprise to see your post and I would love to chat with you. We are distant cousins, sharing the same great grandparents. Yes, Thomas was a missionary.

I'm not so sure. I'm under the impression Martha Harrison travelled alone to Tasmania before she married Joseph Bramich.

Maria Grace Bramich was married to Martin Reading Alexander and the mother of Grandpa Elton Alexander who served in WW1 with his 3 brothers Claude, Bertie and Allen. Martin Reading Alexander was the son of Mathias Alexander a convict who came out woth his brother Joseph and later joined by their other brother John Alexander - John's son was Frederick Mathias Alexander who invented the Alexander Technique. They lived at Table Cape Wynyard and the family house runs as A Bed and Breakfast at 1 Table Cape Road, Wynyard. TAS. I have some photos of them in our family tree on Ancestry. I also have many gravesite photo's.

I have heard of the Alexander Technique although I can't exactly recall what it is. It's amazing how so many lives intersect in the Tasmania's northwest, which makes it all the more interesting. Do you have a photo of Maria Grace Bramich or similar to share? Not many of us have access to Ancestry.

So glad to stumble across this site. My great-great, grandmother Ann Eden Thewlis was Mathias Alexander's 2nd Wife and his 1st wife was Mary Reading, hence Martin "Reading" Alexander. Also my great, grandmother being Martha Matilda Alexander married James Kemp Reynolds, my great, grandfather which are all on my father's side. The Bramich families are also of our families through Martha's marriage into James's Reynolds families from Penguin, Tasmania. I am also an Ancestry Member and this has been a blessing finding other family members.

Welcome and thank you for sharing information on your ancestry. There's a picture of Martin Alexander on the Gallery page, which you can find by using the search function and then there is the continuation of the discussion on the Bramich family in Facebook. Hope you will find something interesting.

The provenance for this photograph is questionable. It has been cited on several genealogy pages pertaining to Bramich family history. Older family members could visually yerify Ada, George, Fanny and Walter. The others they did not recognise. Searching through many different sources l could not find Martha to identify who her (Bramich) husband was; so your information has added a piece to that puzzle. It is therefore most likely cousins not all one family. Walter and Fanny where sisters. The location given as Wynyard is most likely correct.

Thank you for your insight. The information was sourced from the Weekly Courier dated 3 August 1907 Insert 3. There is a third photo with the entire family i.e. children and grandchildren from the same source, but the photo is somewhat fuzzy. Perhaps someone will recognise them.

Apologies for the 2nd comment and yes l do know who many in that first picture are and have circulated the 2nd one to the older family living in Wynyard. Two of them are my great grandfather and great great Aunt. I know a lot of the family history connected to the area in Table Cape and am in the process of completing a social history of the family, to be published as a book early next year, that follows "One Twisted Branch" , my direct line that goes back to the mid 1500's and then anecdotally the late 1300's ! Essentially though all Tasmanian Bramich's have one common ancestor; Thomas and Maria (Short) Bramich from the late 1700's. They had from memory 5 children and 3 grand children emigrate (or as convicts) out to Tasmania. One of their grandchildren, Arthur, who was my greeat x 2 grandfather, his daughter married Martin Alexander.

Wow. For fun I just did a search on the name Bramich to see if I could find any information on my family history then I clicked on this site and recognised that photo straight away. A copy of it is in my family album and i haven't looked at it in years. Martha's son Frank is my Grandmothers Grandfather. I'm so keen to discover more information about my family now.

Hi Kyra, my great grandfather was Frank! His son Clifton Frank Bramich married Elsie Maine and they had two daughters, Lorna and Jean. Lorna was my mum. We have the family photo as well - it must have been handed out to all of the family!

My Great Great Grandfather was Walter Henry Bramich who lived in Boat Harbour. My grandmother Elsie May Baker(Bramich) is 92 and is really enjoying me showing her the photos and sharing the stories of her ancestors.

Kane interesting what you say about Walter Henry and Elsie May. Do you know who Walters parents where ? There is so many duplicates of names ! Arthur had a son Walter Henry who had a daughter Elsie May. She married Hedley Dobson. Both are buried at Flowerdale Cemetery but never had any children.

My biological father grew up with the last name White. He only found out that his father (my grandfather) had originally had a family in Tasmania (surname Bramich) before up and deserting them to move to Victoria where he married again under the name Jack White (I believe). Jack never told anyone this story and died in 1976. My biological father went to a Bramich reunion in Tassie a long time ago now (about 16 years ago)and met a lot of relatives. I don’t have contact with him but I’m interested in who I’m descended from (I was adopted).

My biological father found out that his father had left a family in Tasmania and changed his name to Jack White. My biological father had no idea of this until about 15 years ago and attended a reunion or some family event. His name is Robert White. I’m not sure what the first name was in Tassie but here it was Jack and in Tas he was a Bramich. Im interested in knowing more about the Bramich family.
