ABOUT THE FRANKS

In 1884, Lewis Herbert Shepperd emigrated to Tasmania. He sailed together with Richard and Harry Franks and future sister-in-law, Sarah Jane Franks. Sarah’s fiancé and Lewis Herbert’s brother, Francis Henry Shepperd, was already residing in Tasmania. Previously he had been a clerk at Beckington, England, which is where the Franks family came from.

Eventually Francis Henry Shepperd and Sarah Jane Franks returned to England where they were married at the St George’s Church in Beckington in 1889. The three men who remained, Lewis Herbert Shepperd and Harry and Richard Franks, married into the Gale family and settled in the Elliott district. Harry and Richard’s youngest brother, James Franks, came to Tasmania at a later date, probably around the mid 1890s.

Recently I came across a spectacular photo of a property said to have belonged to the Franks family. However, the caption reads, “A promising potato crop of the farm of Mr C Franks at Elliott.”  This picture was published in the Weekly Courier in December 1916.

​My question is whether there was a typo in the caption as I am not aware of a farm owned by C Franks. Could this have been Harry Franks’ potato farm?
