14 April 1906 Insert 5 William Lanney aka King Billy seated at centre was captured by sealers James Blomley and William Proctor at the mouth of Arthur River along with a group of seven in 1842. They were taken to the VDL Company’s Woolnorth Station in the Tasmanian northwest. Six members of the group including four boys died and King Billy, who was captured as a seven year old, was the only survivor. He was one of the last survivors of the many thousands of Aboriginals who once roamed the land in Tasmania. Queen Trucanini, seen seated at far left, was the last of the race who died on 8 May 1876. |
